Shooting Assignment:  Fill the Frame and Unusual Perspective

Film

**Need COUPONS (or film and/or processing...$3.50) on Monday thru Wednesday BEFORE a shoot (usually on Thursday).

*** You will also need to pay for processing if you want me to processes your film (HIGHLY recommended). It is $1.75 per roll. If you want to get 4x6 prints made of all 24 pictures, you will want to do the processing on your own. All film for me to process is due in by the end of the day shooting class, unless you have your own camera...then it is due at the end of the shooting day. All self processed film is due in by the Monday after shooting.

Here is a summary of the Film/Processing options...

As soon as you get your film, put your NAME and Period with a sharpie actually on the metal film can...not the plastic container. NOTE: It will NOT have the white label on it yet and PLEASE leave the leader hanging out. Put it up in your locker for Thursday.

Topics - You will turn in two 8x10s total, one for each of the following.

-    Something up close, really close, as in “Fill the Frame”.

-    Something with an "Unusual Perspective".

* Shoot 3-4 SUBJECTS for each topic…3-4 pictures of each subject. Any remaining pictures can be what ever you want. IOW, you have TWO (2) topics. Shoot 3-4 subjects for each of those two topics. For each subject you shoot, take 3-4 pictures (angles, various compositions, etc.). 2x3x3=18 pictures minimum.

* Be creative and look for something unique in all pictures. Keep in mind that you will be PRINTING Black and White Pictures, so think of what will make good Black and White pictures: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/06/09/beautiful-black-and-white-photography/

Tips to Remember:

·        Use the neck strap and keep a hand on the camera at all times. This keeps it from banging into walls and doors as you walk around. Keep your fingers off the glass of the lens. If you do touch the lens, let me clean it with a special tissue.

·        After loading film: 1) Confirm the correct ISO. 2) Check that the film is advancing…by watching the film rewind knob move. Do NOT open the back of the camera until you KNOW that your film is fully rewound. If in doubt…ask!

·        Log your exposure for each shot. Log the shutter speed and aperture for each shot…and write one or two word description.

·        Shoot at or above the minimum shutter speed of 1/60th of a sec…control the aperture to put the needle in the middle. This will help avoid the primary cause of blurry images.

·        If you have a really bright or dark object…try to meter off of a nearby neutral object in the same lighting to get the correct exposure.

·        Focus and recompose. It’s ok to have the center of your subject off center…except for “Fill the Frame”.

·        Zoom with your feet. You only have a 50mm lens this first time…so MOVE your feet to change perspective.

·        Shoot quickly. But be sure to take notes about what you have taken pictures of. This is like when a photographer shoots for the newspaper or television. Take notes about what was shot, and any particular details, name of person, etc.

·        Shoot 3-4 pictures of the each subject, trying for different perspective, composition, etc.

·        Look for Vertical/Horizontal. Shoot whichever is appropriate.

·        Focus carefully, rocking the focus back and forth a few times…double check the exposure before taking the picture.

Guidelines:

·        Stay out of restricted areas and classrooms. If passing through the main building, pass quickly, do not loiter.

·        Stay with your partner at all times. But try not to shoot the same things.

·        Each person will need to take at least 12 different photographs on Topic. If after you have covered your topic(s), and you have film left over, you make take candids of other pictures as you see fit.

·         If you are shooting with a school camera, you MUST complete your roll of film by the end of class. You will turn it in the next day of class. If you are shooting with your own camera, you must have your film turned into me by the end of the day.

·        No pictures of: trash, bumper stickers, graffiti, tattoos, or “parts” of a person will be acceptable.
