Picasa Web Setup
Assignment: Create a Picasa Web Account for your online Photo Gallery from your Picasa Browser.
Goals: Provide Proof of Life for Projects and Develop a portfolio of your best work
Tools: Picasa and Internet Explorer
See Student and Instructor Galleries
Instructions:
* The following instructions assumes you have installed Picasa on your home computer and transferred the images to your computer. http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=card+reader&search_constraint=3944&pref_store=651&tab_value=Store&ic=16_0&ref=&search_sort=4&selected_items=+
1. Create and set up a PicasaWeb account:

Use the "Sign In to Web Albums" link in Picasa (above) or use the following link...

Picasa Settings... Go to Tools, Then Options. Change your Album visibility to Public.

If you already uploaded an album that is set to "Anyone with the link", please set it to Public so others, like me and your peers, can see the album. Here is how:

Profile URL - Setting up a simply URL for sharing with friends!

Scroll to the bottom to the section to name your gallery. This should be something easy that you could tell a friend what your gallery is.

SECURITY CAUTION: Be sure not to include any personally identifiable information that would link to your last name. Like, do not include your last name in the Gallery URL that you will set up later. But you do need to put your last name the account registration.
2. Go to Picasa on your computer (it should already be open, but if not, look on your desktop, or use the START menu on your computer).
3. Create Albums for specific topics or events. CULL your photos for your best work...i.e.. don't put just anything...or everything into an album. Be selective. You should only upload a few per event or subject shot for your Category Galleries (see next step). Some specific galleries include Nature, Macros, Sports, Journalism, Special Effects, Deviations (or some other term to indicate Modified or Photo Art). For specific assignments, like the PDP, name of gallery should be something like: "2011-01-15 Landscape, 4th 6 PDP". See ADVANCED below for more details about setting the date for your galleries.
If you have already named your gallery, and it is incorrect, go into the album, click on Edit then Album Properties. You will be able to change the Name and the Date. See bottom of this page for a tip on the naming strategy.
4. After you have created the albums, turn on the Sync to Web options for your Albums. This will keep the ALBUM synced with your computer. Do not sync to web your entire shooting folder. Instead, make an Album of your selected images and sync only the album. This way, only the best of your images are online. You can upload one picture at a time by right click (ctrl + click to select more than one) some pictures and "Upload to Web Album" to share on your PicasaWeb account, but it is easier to just add it to the album, then it will sync to your Web Album.

5. Sharing your gallery with the teacher. After you have set the Visibility of the Galleries and set an easy URL, send me a link to an album online in PicasaWeb.
Here's how:

This will bring up an option to send a person an email.

You could also just copy the URL for your gallery.

And go to your email and send the URL via a standard email.
Send to DrewLoker@gmail.com
6. Manage your account on line. Add other students portfolio. Leave positive & constructive comments for other students work under comments.
When you are done, your album should look like this: http://picasaweb.google.com/drewloker/
TIP: You will only have 1 GB of free space to start out with. Downsize the original images to "Medium Size" using the Picasa Web Uploader under "Upload Setting". But more space is cheap.
Tip: so that people cannot just outright download all of your pictures, be sure this setting is changed:
Tip: Use Picasa at home and upload more pictures.
7. Uploading pictures from a computer that does NOT have Picasa installed is possible. But it HIGHLY recommended that you go ahead and install Picasa. It is easy and MUCH faster. However, if you lack administrative privileges to install, it can be done.

Choose an album or "create a new album".

Be sure to only include pictures in your album that you would want to display at a show like Bruins Take a Bow or Other Exhibitions and that are appropriate to show your MOM and Mr. Daniels. Also, send me your PicasaWeb album URL so that I can link to you on my staff page.
Note...your gallery link will be posted here: http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/studentphotos.htm

Advanced
Galleries with an ALTERED Creation Date - Picasa only allows you to rearrange galleries by Album Date or Upload Date...which is pretty limiting. So, I have devised a system that allows you to categories alphabetically. Update: Piccas FINALLY offers the ability to sort by date. But, I still maintain this strategy to force the Alumbs to appear in the correct order.
Set the date of each album to match the year with the alphabet. Use
the month and day to sort albums that begin with the same letter. Newer albums
for like a current event should begin with 2010-01-18.
