Notepad Assignment

Each student will produce at least one set of finished notepads. The layout will be done in MS Word. The end result will be four pads, each 4.25" by 5.5", of 30 sheets each. There is NO cost of the initial set of 4 pads. Each additional set of 4 or each additional 30 sheets will cost $0.25. These make excellent Christmas gifts for friends, parents, teachers, or yourself. See the bottom of this page for some of the feedback we have received for doing these Notepads.

1.      The first step is to plan your finished work on a clean, blank sheet of paper. Fold your paper into quarter sections. You will need to include a simple sketch/outline of any images you intend to use, and any text that you will have, for each pad. A person's name must appear on EACH pad...these MUST be PERSONALIZED notepads! AVOID YELLOW OBJECTS!

a.       Clipart should be used (rather than a picture). If you need to modify an image, it will have to be done in a separate Photoshop file and saved on your disk. You will then need to “Insert” the modified image and paste it into the Notepad File. Graying out an image for the background or a “watermark" can be done in Word…just keep in mind that you will loose some quality when it is copied.

b.      You will design 4 uniquely different Notepads per sheet. (You may also design more than 4 if you finish the first set). One must be for a West Brook Faculty/Staff member (make this pad #1...upper left). See the signup list here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Av1TgV270uIadE0tNmQ5cjczcGg0dWNuQlItZVhKNWc  The other 3 can be for whomever you want. If you are doing a 2nd set, be sure to get special instructions on how to keep from having to completely redo the same design over. (After the 1st one is done EXACTLY like you want, simply select each element and copy/paste, or use the shift select method.) NO TIME SPECIFIC THEMES...like NO CHRISTMAS PADs!

2.      Use the template provided on the Public Shared Documents of the \\wbphoto\public server to design your pads (You will find the template in the folder path: \\wbphoto\Public\Clipart (more)\Templates). You will need to save the file after you open it. The “guides” are to help with your layout and will need to be turned to WHITE BEFORE printing.

3.      You may draw a border using the appropriate drawing tool. Modify the border by changing the properties “Format Object”. Or if you would like a special pre-made border, you will need to insert one from the clip art book. You can not use the Automated Borders inside Word when doing this type of layout.

4.      Bring the clipart in by Dragging and Dropping (see the instruction sheet for inserting ClipArt).

5.      Do not do the lettering until you have all your clipart into place. Be sure ALL TEXT is placed in Text Boxes.

    a. If you are using lines on your pad...make sure the lines go ALL THE WAY ACROSS, OVER the gray guide lines on both sides ...and an equal amount. If they are too short...they will look REALLY short after you delete the guides. Or BETTER YET...if you want LINES on your pad, I have already done some lines for you. Go back tot he template folder and find the NotePad with Guides. Open it...and copy the guides, then PASTE to your NotePad.

6.      When you are ready to Print, get an "Ok" from Mr. Loker.  Make sure there are no mistakes.  Reprints due to an error on your part will need to be paid for by you.

7.      You must turn in one complete printout.  LIGHTLY write your name and period number in pencil on the BACK of the printout. If YOU If you want MORE than 30 extra sheets, please ask for a “Sticky Note” and write the total number of additional sheets you are requesting (i.e. 30 will get you 4 pads of 60 sheets each).

8.      You will make the finished product (cut & padded with board) after I Xerox your original.

* All text MUST go in a text box!!!

* All OBJECTS (text boxes, graphics, pictures, clipart, etc.) must be set to square objects.  - Set the Advanced Properties by turning on the "Lock Anchor" and turn OFF "Move object with text".

Delivery Receipt: You will need to deliver your staff pad and get a delivery receipt for your final 10 points of this assignment. Even if you don't care about the 10 points, the lack of a delivery receipt is subject to investigation to make sure you aren't running around with a stack of staff pads. So, get the delivery receipt in. Put your name and Roll Number on the Notepad and turn in to the HORIZONTAL Class Slot. For the NotePads...the Delivery Receipt is simply the top sheet of the pads...the one that is NOT in color.

Steps for Bulk Paper Cutting (for when your NotePads have been copied...and ready to cut). (These instructions are posted next to the Bulk Paper Cutter)

 ·       Jog the paper so that it is as straight as possible. Use Jogger machine if necessary and available. Be sure the paper is JOGGED really well…to ensure a SMOOTH cut.

·       Put a cover sheet of scratch paper on top of your stack.

·       Cut width-wise 1st…this means usually to put the paper stop at 5.5”.

o      Insert the paper into the center of the cutting area

o      Lower the Paper Press (wheel on top) down firmly onto the paper.

o      Lower the safety guard (cover in front)

o      Lift the safety catch

o      GENTLY lower the blade (big handle) until it comes in contact with the paper.

o      Pull the blade through the paper  until it stops. The paper sticking out from under the blade should all move freely. Be careful not to tear the paper away…if the stack doesn’t move…you may need to pull the blade down a bit more.

o      Lift up handle, raise the paper press and remove both stacks of paper. Remove the scratch paper from the bottom half, and join the two stacks for the next cut.

·       Cut the 8.5” side now by setting the paper stop to 4.25”

o      Jog the paper several times to insure a smooth cut

o      Insert paper and make sure it is perfectly straight up and down, left to right, and along the paper stop.

o      Lower the Paper Press firmly into position.

o      Lower the safety guard (cover in front)

o      Lift the safety catch

o      GENTLY lower the blade (big handle) until it comes in contact with the paper.

o      Pull the blade through the paper  until it stops.
