Photo Montage

Assignment:   Design and Produce a Photo Montage

Goals:             Learn to create creative works of art with Photoshop and photos you have taken.

Tools:              Adobe Photoshop

Instruction for setup:

1. Create a new PS document that is 8"x10.5" or 10.5"x8" with the resolution set to 200.

Description:

Our next project will involve creating several photomontages, at least one (or more) of which will be printed, submitted for a grade, and entered into the contest in April. This will be done along with other projects for the remainder of the 6 weeks, so as you finish up with other work, continue your work in progress.

This is an artistic project. As such, some of you will move very quickly and finish a sample quickly. If this is the case, complete several different samples and we will choose your best piece. Some of you will spend more time creating one complex piece. If this is the case, budget your time so that you can finish by the end of the 6 weeks. You may  need to do some search for samples on the internet. Use www.pbase.com to look for “Photoshop Montage” (search will only work at home...as PBase's search is blocked...sorry).

Channel Masking: I have mention a different way to make a Photoshop cutout. To mask a difficult subject, try using this with your photo montages.

Printing Photo Montage: After you get an OK to print, use the "Print with Preview". Most of you will need to change the page orientation to landscape under the "Page Setup". Then click on "Scale to Fit Media". Turn-in inside of a sheet protector.

Photo Collages: Your goal will be to have at least two examples...one with 1-3 images...and one with 4+ images. This is NOT supposed to be a 5 picture collage like I showed you in class. That was a sample on HOW to do the feathered edge and a traditional darkroom collage. Continue working with a variety of knockouts (when you cut an image out of it's original pictures to make your montages. Use the feathered image when appropriate. The 1-3 image Montage should be more like a digitally modified image, versus the 4+ would be more of a collage/montage of pictures.
