Through out the year there are NUMEROUS contests available to you. I have created this page to try to list them all out. Some contests we will focus on as a class (usually Photo II+) and will be noted elsewhere (Focus and/or assignment pages). I have put the general due dates...follow the links to find out the exact deadlines which change from year to year. Note: Class deadlines are usually 2-4 days ahead of the official deadline to allow for mailing, etc. Some have entry fees, but there are prizes...some of them quite good. Others are free to enter and still have prizes.  Some are PRINT and have to be mailed, and some are DIGITAL and STILL have to be mailed, on a disk, while others can be submitted via email and/or the internet.

Entering contests that are not required as class will help you to earn bonus points and earn a position on the Lamar and Shangri La Field Trips in April.

See results of some of these contests on the Student Award page. And remember, even after the school year is over, you can enter this years photos in many of these contests NEXT year, even if you are no longer a student at West Brook.

Contests in @GREEN@ are primarily used to determine the ATPI Top Image Makers (TIM) for the entire state. All contests, even local, will count, just not as many points are earned. West Brook has had two TIM: Andre Woodard and Miguel Perez. A great strategy is to focus on entering as many of those contest as possible. Several are extra credit, so please plan ahead.

RME: Entering the Required MINIMUM Entries will usually be for a MAX grade of 90. Enter more to earn a 100.

A note regarding contests. Entering contest can definitely be frustrating...I will be the first to tell you that. But, like Babe Ruth, you may have to strike out a few times to hit a home run. Personally, I am the KING of Club 6...which is the lowest score you can receive at the BCC Monthly Competition: http://forum.bcc.drewloker.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=99

So, why enter? Because the process of entering forces me to at the very least prepare my images for contest. It forces me to look over sometimes 1,000s of recent photos that I may never have looked at. And, occasionally, I win one. Maybe one day I will be famous.

2010 Official Rules for the

26TH Annual Jasper Fall Fest Photography Contest

(Sponsored by the EAST TEXAS PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB)

SPECIFICATIONS:

(1)           Photos must Not Be Smaller than 8x8 or larger than 8x12, and must be matted.  ONLY 11x14, BLACK or WHITE mats may be used.  NO OVAL or DECORATIVE Mats PLEASE! NO EXCEPTIONS.  If your mat or picture does not meet the requirements, it will not be included in the competition, but WILL be displayed on Saturday during the Festival. 

(2)           NO FRAMED photos will be accepted.

(3)           Each entry must have an Official Entry Form attached to the back of the photo.

(4)           A $3.00 entry fee must accompany each photo submitted.  Checks should be made payable to the EAST TEXAS PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB.

(5)           Entries must be received by 4:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 23, 2010.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  All mail-in entries must have return postage in the form of stamps, a return mailing label, and a return mailing container with room for ribbons, if you win.

 

(7)           All black & white and digitally manipulated photos MUST BE entered in the corresponding category.

(8)           Each photograph must be the work of the person submitting that photograph.

(9)           The contest is open to amateur AND professional photographers.

(10)         Neither the East Texas Photography Club nor the Jasper/Lake Sam Rayburn Area Chamber of Commerce will accept responsibility for any lost or damaged photos; HOWEVER, the utmost care will be taken with all photos.

(11)         Judging will be based on originality, creativity, composition, quality and visual impact.  The

                Club has the right to move any photo to another category as they see fit.

(12)         A cash award of $25.00 and a ribbon will be awarded to the Best of Show.  Ribbons will be given in each category for 1st, 2nd,  3rd and Honorable Mentions, and a Viewers Choice ribbon will also be awarded on Saturday, October 2, 2010.

(13)         Any photo may be entered that has not previously won a ribbon in the EAST TEXAS

(5)           The theme is “OPEN” (any subject).  Any photo may be entered that HAS NOT PREVIOUSLY won an award in any East Texas Photography Club Fall Fest Photo Contest.

(6)           A cash award of $15.00 will be awarded to the Best of Show and ribbons will be given for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and honorable mentions.

(7)           There is a limit of five (5) photos per contestant. 

(8)           Photos may be COLOR or BLACK & WHITE (includes Sepia).

(9)           Deadline for entries is 4:00 PM on Thursday, September 23, 2010.

Previous Contest: Check out http://www.tobaccocosts.org/ for ideas of possible images and slogans. Make it your own. Be creative. Use the filters. Use an image you have taken, put a twist on it (some sort of filter, or reverse image, or something), put some text on it, see what you can do with the text to fancy it up.

Open Photoshop and create a new document that is 8.5 x 11 x 200 dpi.

 

When you are finished...in Photoshop, Save As as a .jpg with a file name of "Tobacco Costs TShirt by your FULL name". Set the Jpeg Quality to 10-12 depending on the file size indicated...trying to keep it to 1-2 MB.
