Contest - General Info

Entry Form

Category (3) & Division #s (lots) - There are three categories: 1 - Photo     2 - DP    or    3 - MM

1. PHOTOGRAPHY (Traditional) - P

          Division Name                                            Division #

Commercial/Store Printed, film AND Digital

Portrait, Studio or environmental, like a person sitting at a desk, of a group or individual or even a selfie.............................. 6018

Essay - Journalistic, Travel or Technical. 3 or more photos to tell a story. ................................................................... 6024

   * Photoshop/Picasa can be used to generate the Essay. Include the captions.

Landscape. Even if it has buildings, if it is mostly about the land, this is the correct category............................................... 6028

Nature, Flowers & Plants, etc............................................................................................................ ............................ 6030

Architecture. If it is mostly a building or structure, this is the correct category................................................................... 6032

Action/Motion.- Sports.................................................................................................................................................. 6034

Animals - Portraits of pets, pet life, wild animals, domesticated animals, etc.......................................... ............................. 6038

Still Life or Product. Image of product to be used in sales & advertising or for artistic purposes ........................................ 6040

      * Although different, for contest purposes, Product and Still Life have been merged.

Close-Up (Macro).......................................................................................................................................................... 6044

Journalism (current events)............................................................................................................................................ 6046

Abstract. If a viewer can't easily tell what it is...it goes here.............................................................................................. 6048

Special Effects. Double Exposure, Long Exposure (In camera...like State Fair, Christmas Lights, etc.)................................ 6050

*NOTE: There is a fine line between Product, Still Life, Close-up (Macro) and Nature (Flowers). If it is a plant, it definitely goes in the Nature Division. Use your best judgment...and try to spread your entries out so you have multiple entries. For example. Let say you have a close-up of a watch. Technically, that could go in any of the three categories. Decide based on what else is in the picture. Does it look like something you could use in advertisement? Call it Product. If it is arranged with other items that tell a story, call it Still Life. If it is mostly a really close-up, put it in the Close-Up Division. But if you already have something that definitely fits in one of the above Divisions, then stick the watch in another one so you have an entry in BOTH Divisions.

Student Printed (film/darkroom) - Many of the above are combined since most are taken on campus anyway.

Portrait, including self....................................................................................... ........................................................... 6021

Landscape, Nature and Architecture.......................................................................................................................... 6029

Animals (wildlife or pets).............................................................................................................................................. 6039

Product, Still Life, Abstract, and Close-Up................................................................................................................. 6041

Journalism (including Action Motion/sports)................................................................................................................... 6047

2. DESKTOP PUBLISHING - DP

DCI - Computer Manipulated Digital Image (Montage) – 2+ Digital image(s) which have been

            computer manipulated. ...................................................................................................................................... 6112

Digitized Image with MAJOR enhancements (i.e.. altered image, like digitally removing a person, HEAVY HDR, super surrealistic colors)..........6130

* NOTE: 6112 and 6130 are similar. The difference is that 6112 is a creation of Photoshop by adding images together. 6130 is fixing a photo by removing major objects and significantly altering the original image.

* NOTE: The difference in the above photo DP categories  vs. Photography categories is if you have manipulate the image beyond TRADITIONAL Photography, or what is generally accepted as STRAIGHT (minor modifications) or In Camera Editing. It is ok to have used Photoshop in the top PHOTOGRAPHY  (1) categories above, but they are more of the traditional or straight photos. 6112 & 6130 are generally Digital Photos that have been enhanced in Photoshop.

Notepads, etc  (all four together for a total layout).......................................................................................................... 6116

Poster, etc. - Single Sheet (any full sheet Design other than Collages)............................................................................ 6118  (see note below)

* Poster 1 is only eligible if you used your own artwork. IOW, if the strength of the project relies on the work of another photographer, you can't enter it.

Poster 2 tends to be more appropriate for this contest because it is more about your layout, even if you used clipart.

Instructions for creating a Database Record and Print Display Tag:

You will be entering your information in database records in the application AppleWorks...which helps generate a variety of forms, including the Display Tag.

See online staff/gloker/EOYContest.htm for the latest instructions.

  1. Map to the Data Folder make it "T"
  2. Open the EOY Entry Form...located in \\172.17.180.35\Data\EntryForms and choose the one named: "Entry Form - WB# YOUR NAME - Save to your ENTRIES".
    1. You may get a warning that it is already open. Click "Open a copy". Also, it may come up BEHIND the forward window. Move the window out of the way to reveal the popup:
  3. SAVE AS TO THE "ENTRY FORMS" folder immediately, changing the file name to reflect YOUR NAME
    1. Sample of new file name: EOY Entry Form - WB1 Marcotte, Kayla
    2. You may have to change to "My Network Places" and navigate to the \\172.17.180.35\Data\EntryForms\Entries folder (as a backup in your Document...and then copy over)
  4. Create a new record (Ctrl + R).
    1. Do records for the PRINT ENTRIES FIRST (1st)...any physical print that will actually be on display (hard copy).
    2. Then do a record for the Digital Files.
  5. Type in your data.
    1. Be sure to put a Title of your work…especially for photos. For computer work, it can just be a simple a description (like “NotePads" but with out the quotes).
    2. Use the tab key to move between fields. "Tab" moves you forward through the database fields, "Shift + Tab" moves you backwards.
    3. Notice that there are 7 fields. If you can see where to start, click in approximately the correct place where a field should be.
    4. Be sure to type in regular case...no all caps and please capitalize the appropriate letters.
      1. First Name First on the actual label
    5. Be sure to spell correctly…your name and title will appear on a label when the print is put on display.
      1. For group projects (video), put an entire name in one field, and the other name in the other field.
    6. Some fields are Pop Ups…just click to select the best choice. Be sure all fields are filled out...see sample below.
    7. You can go to "View All - List View" under Layout [not "List"] to view all of your entries. This is to keep track and verify the correct categories, etc. Just be sure to change it back before printing. There is a Zoom In/Out Icon in the lower left corner to change your view.
  6. For EACH entry, create a new record (Ctrl + R)...not a new file. (Shortcut...complete one record entirely, then Duplicate (Ctrl + D) and change the fields that need to be changed, like the title and the classification).
  7. When you have completed all of your PRINT entries, run the spell checker (Edit menu/Writing Tools or Ctrl + = ). Confirm that you are still in the "Display Tag" layout...especially if you changed it to the "View All - List View"
  8. Printing will be done from one computer...and I will help the first few print. It is a little tricky because we do NOT need the digital only entries printed.
    1. If you make a mistake and need to redo a tag, etc., PLEASE let me know. You can NOT print all tags at one time.
    2. If you do err, I will help you HIDE the digital entries and/or unnecessary print entries, and print just the labels for the actual prints. Then we will show all records and submit.
  9. After you have your label print outs, see a sample to see how to attach it to your prints. It is VERY specific where things need to be taped down, where the tape needs to go and can NOT go, etc.

When you print, you will see an Alert...just click ok.

Then, make sure V61 HP 3550 or Oki 5400 is selected.

If you are reprinting ONE label, you MUST click the record, and then choose "Current Record".

Preparing digital entries for submission:

  1. West Brook EOY Contest - Nearly the same as above, but files do NOT need to be resized. Therefore, the easiest way is to simply use Adobe Bridge

    1. Launch Bridge and point to your pictures

    2. Rename the file - LastName_Category#_####.jpg (lastname_category name_image number) - i.e. Loker_Sports_####  (leave the #### as your original digital camera number file)

    3. Embed metadata to the EXIF. Ctrl + I. For EACH entry,  insert the following info. Copy from below EXACTLY, then, after pasting it and editing with YOUR info in your first image, copy it from inside Bridge), so you can paste it into the next file and only have to change the Category, if necessary.

Category, Student Name, West Brook HS, Beaumont, Tx, Drew Loker

    4. Drag and Drop your file to the correct location. Open the Data folder so you can see the file entries. Drag from Bridge to the folder. Double check to make sure it made it in the folder. If it doesn't go into the folder, it will not be judged.

Contest Notes for Daily Focus RE the EOYC Contest

4 Very INTENSE days today thru Thursday. I need 110%. If you have time and you are sitting around twirling your thumbs in another class, get in here and wrap up EYOC and other stuff.

3. In AppleWorks, go to "List View" under Layout [not "List"] to view all of your entries. [To keep track and verify the correct categories, etc. "Tab" moves you forward through the database fields, "Shift + Tab" moves you backwards. Be sure to type in regular case...no all caps and please capitalize the appropriate letters. Check spelling with a "Ctrl + =".]

**** Today you will create entry tags for each of your entries. EVERYBODY enters. You should WANT to enter...you could win some money...but your grade does depend on how many you enter...so...think quick...and plan out how many you can enter. In Apple Works, you will create a new record (Ctrl + R). Once you have entered your first record, you will DUPLICATE THAT RECORD (Ctrl + D), and then modify the new record(s) to match the new entry. Please follow the instructions on the sheet of paper...or on the internet. You might also be able to open it from the Entry Form link. If it doesn't open, you will need to manually open as described on the sheet of paper and shown in class.

* Let's get right to to work! No wasted time! Please remember to complete your contest planner sheet FIRST then you can create your entry forms on the computer. The planner will be turned in to me with all of your entries for your grade assessment. Get your entry forms ready...then help somebody else or begin working on your CD cover. Do not submit and/or print the entry forms until you are cleared to do so. If you have missed...or cannot enter, there may be a make up activity, but it will not be easy...nor desirable. Do what you can to get your entries tagged and submitted.

When you are done with your tags, please run the spell checker (Ctrl + =)...change the LAYOUT to "Display Tag List" and proof your tags one more time. Then ask for an "OK to Print". Then, submit your tags via Synchroneyes (except for 7th period) (wait for demo on overhead...use Submit File in Connect menu...then navigate to the entry forms file on your P drive) or drag and drop to the Data Folder under the folder "Student Completed Entries". If you need to do a new tag after you have printed your main batch please get special help when printing. Cut your tags down to 5.5" x 3.5" and tape to the back of your entries. Flip your name portion around backwards.

Prepare for...

Contest Deadline! This is it!!! If you do not finish during class, please come in today as time permits to complete your entries.

You MUST turn in your Contest Planner sheet along with your entries for filing before you leave campus today. If you don't turn in your entries today, you will have a irrevocable ZERO. And...you must transfer the Entry Form FILE to \\wbphoto\data\entryforms\Student completed Entries

  1. Complete the Minimum Documentation Section. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it needs to be completed. You can Copy/Paste from one record to the next. Be careful not to get mixed up in somebody else’s record. Use the record index (notepad like icon to the left side of the screen like the one pictured here) to flip back and forth between your records to copy from the “Input” field of one record, to the next record.
