Communication Graphics End of Year Contest Category Planner

This contest is from the guidelines for the state level of  Communication Graphics in Technology Education that deals with photographic, print and computerized methods of communicating print media to individual or mass audiences. Resources include people, information, materials, tools, machines, energy, capital, and time to communicate a message.

Entries that depict sex, drugs, tobacco, gangs, violence, or cults will not be permitted. This does not preclude posters, “etc.” that may bring awareness of these and other issues as deemed appropriate by TEA, State Board of Education, and local school policy.

You may only enter 1 per category…choose your best yourself...until you have entered MORE than re For contest purposes, any category that has three or less competitors, the category will be merged with another similar category. Each category will have a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and several HMs There will be one Best in Class (BIC) for each: Photography and Desktop Publishing. Video will also receive ribbons...although a separate BIC is not awarded at this time until the total number of entries into different categories warrants such an award.

NOTE:  You must enter at least 6 Entries as minimum expectation, preferably 3 photos and 3 desktop publishing entries or any combination. You may certainly enter more than required. Entering this contest is a MAJOR grade and a MAJOR focus for this 6 weeks. I have been preparing you for this all year. :) Your grade is very simple and will be based on the total number of entries. 6=100, 5=90, 4=80, 3=70

Special Effects. Double Exposure, Long Exposure (In camera...like State Fair, Christmas Lights, etc.).....6050        6051

* There is a fine line between Product, Still Life, Close-up (Macro) and Close-ups of Flowers. If it is a plant, it definitely goes in the Nature category. Use your best judgment...and try to spread your entries out so you have multiple entries. For example. Let say you have a close-up of a watch. Technically, that could go in any of the three categories. Decide based on what else is in the picture. Does it look like something you could use in advertisement? Call it Product. If it is arranged with other items that tell a story, call it Still Life. If it is mostly a really close-up, put it in the Macro Category. But if you already have something that definitely fit in one of the above categories, then stick the watch in another one so you have an entry in BOTH categories.

6112, 6114 and 6130 are all very similar. The contest is to see how well you enhanced an image, but kept it essentially authentic. For all of these categories, you must have the original printed out and taped to the back.

Instructions for creating a Minimum Documentation and Print Display Tag:

You are entering your information in AppleWorks...which helps generate a variety of forms:

  1. Open the Contest Entry Form...located in \\Public\Data\Entry Forms and choose the one named: "Entry Form - Save to your P Drive".
  2. Create a new record (Ctrl + R).
  3. Type in your data.
    1. Be sure to spell correctly…your name and title will appear on a label when the print is put on display.
    2. Some fields are Pop Ups…just click to select the best choice.
    3. Be sure to put a Title of your work…especially for photos. For computer work, it can just be a simple a description (like “NotePads).
  4. Complete the Minimum Documentation Section. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it needs to be completed. You can Copy/Paste from one record to the next. Be careful not to get mixed up in somebody else’s record. Use the record index (notepad like icon to the left side of the screen like the one pictured here) to flip back and forth between your records to copy from the “Input” field of one record, to the next record.
  5. For EACH entry, create a new record (Ctrl + R) not a new file. (Shortcut...complete one record entirely, then Duplicate (Ctrl + D) and change the fields that need to be changed.
  6. When you have completed all entries, run the spell checker. Then, change the layout to: "Display Tag List"
  7. Get an ok to print...and then print all tags at one time.
  8. After you have your print outs, see a sample to see how to attach it to your prints. It is VERY specific where things need to be taped down, where the tape needs to go and can NOT go, etc.

In AppleWorks, go to "List View" under Layout [not "List"] to view all of your entries. [To keep track and verify the correct categories, etc. "Tab" moves you forward through the database fields, "Shift + Tab" moves you backwards. Be sure to type in regular case...no all caps and please capitalize the appropriate letters. Check spelling with a "Ctrl + =".]

This is the Display Tag (that comes from the info you entered above):

Sample Winners from previous shows:

Contest Notes for Daily Focus RE the EOYC Contest

4 Very INTENSE days today thru Thursday. I need 110%. If you have time and you are sitting around twirling your thumbs in another class, get in here and wrap up EYOC and other stuff.

**** Today you will create entry tags for each of your entries. EVERYBODY enters. You should WANT to enter...it's free...but your grade does depend on how many you enter...so...think quick...and plan out how many you can enter. In Apple Works, you will create a new record (Ctrl + R). Once you have entered your first record, including documentation, you will DUPLICATE THAT RECORD (Ctrl + D), and then modify the new record(s) to match the new entry. Please follow the instructions on the sheet of paper...or on the internet. You might also be able to open it from the Entry Form link. If it doesn't open, you will need to manually open as described on the sheet of paper and shown in class.

* Let's get right to to work! No wasted time! Please remember to complete your contest planner sheet FIRST then you can create your entry forms on the computer. The planner will be turned in to me with all of your entries for your grade assessment. Get your entry forms ready...then help somebody else or begin working on your CD cover. Do not submit and/or print the entry forms until you are cleared to do so. If you have missed...or cannot enter, there may be a make up activity, but it will not be easy...nor desirable. Do what you can to get your entries tagged and submitted.

> Prepare for...

When you are done with your tags, please run the spell checker (Ctrl + =)...change the LAYOUT to "Display Tag List" and proof your tags one more time. Then ask for an "OK to Print". Flip your name portion around backwards.

Service Hours for Bonus points or Makeup: Are you ineligible for the MSAA because you did not print enough pictures this year? Good news...you can earn eligibility by working the Display at Parkdale Mall. Two hours of time = 1 8x10. This will just make you ELIGIBLE to do the MSAA (not replace a grade from a previous 6 weeks)...or you can earn some bonus points. So, if you only entered 4 entries (an 80) you can bring your grade up by working the contest area this weekend. OR, if you are NOT doing the Magazine Subscription, you can earn points for an assignment.
